Victoria and the Great Ocean Road - Day 1

Saturday, 20 September 2008: Brisbane - Coonabarabran.

My plan to leave at 7:00am wasn’t a particularly good one and I didn’t tell Therese. As I felt sorry for her, I let her sleep another half hour. Finally, after getting Daniel to test the new camera, we were mobile at about 8:15 with the GPS giving an anticipated arrival time in Coonabarabran of 5:20pm.

On the way towards Warwick I ask the inevitable question, “Should we do the run to Goomburra just to see if the camera is on the side of the road, particularly as Bear had thought he may have hit it when it fell off, thinking it was a rock on the road. While it would be a one in a million chance, we would never die wondering if we checked so the decision was made. Who cares about the one hour delay. We should be able to make that up. No sign of the camera; even stopped at the local store to see if someone had handed it in. No luck but at least we would not die wondering. By the time we were back on the highway, the GPS said 6:14 as the arrival time.

Top up the fuel at Warwick and head for Goondiwindi. A Honda Blackbird tags on with us and sits there until Inglewood. On the way we went past Bear’s mate’s place at Omanama, blew the horn multiple times as requested but didn’t see any signs of recognition though.

After lunch and fuel we headed south into NSW onto a boring stretch of road with our arrival time of 6:10. Every time I pick up a few minutes, I lose them with a stop of some sort. Maybe the GPS is not too far out with an overall average time. Through to Narrabri and the week of late nights are starting to catch up and I’m looking forward to stopping and an early night. Therese keeps passing forward the snakes for a sugar hit and the water bottle to wash them down and stave off the dehydration.

Into Coonabarabran At 5:45 and found a caravan park. Checked in and now to check up on the reason we had to get here. Coonabarabran has many large and small observatories and we intended to visit the Sky Watch for a session. Sorry, no longer open but we can get you to another one. The lady makes the booking and the show starts at 6:30. Where is it? About 8 klms out of town on the other side to where we are. Tent went up quick. Rolled it out and what is inside? The camera that went missing last week. Apparently it was not on the drawbar of the trailer at all. I don’t know what Bear hit, if anything, but it sure wasn’t my camera. I now wish I had unrolled the tent instead of relying on feel.

So much for the early night, the show finished at 8:30, we found a great Chinese restaurant and it was 10:30 by the time we hit the sack.
