254 kilometres today. Unfortunately, many of those were in the rain. Never fear, good rain gear means we stayed dry and the only thing it meant was all these lovely corners had to be taken at a bit more sedate pace.
We left Cooryong this morning and travelled via Towong, Tintaldra and with the threat of rain, the wet gear went on at Walwa. Riding along the Murray River Road meant continually seeing this river on the right all morning. Not long after the wet gear went on we hit the rain for a while with a subsequent drop in temperature. Smoko was at an old pub near Granya. At the end of a slippery gravel driveway no less. Ah well, good riding skill practice.
From there we continued down the Murray River Road to where the old town of Tallangatta was 50 years ago before most of it was relocated a few kilometres down the road when the Hume Dam was build. The old location of the town is underwater when the dam is full though this time, the low level of the dam meant that it was open dry land. There are still a number of landmarks visible including the railway line embankment and foundations of some of the buildings. From the old town we rode further along the road to a lookout overlooking the new town and the upper end of the dam.
Then it was on through Kiewa, Keygunyah, Dederang and Running Creek to Mt Beauty for lunch at a bakery doing good value meals then a bit of a look around the town centre. For a lot of this part of the ride we were in a thunderstorm complete with the lightning flashing in the not too far distance. Got to take the good with the bad I guess.
After lunch it was time for play again with the run down to Bright via the Tawonga Gap Road, 21 klms of winding road up to Tawonga Gap then down to the Great Alpine Road and into Bright with an early finish for the day. Well, not so early by the time I finish and upload this.
Tomorrow it's back up the Tawonga Gap Road for a run across the top of Australia.
