Victorian High Country Ride - Day 12

Wednesday, 18 November 2015

Underway at 8:30 this morning with everyone on deck. Not much choice actually as we were moving on to Cann River. 354 klms covered for the day through a lot of dairy and sheep country with a few runs through the lighter, drier forests. From Traralgon we headed north through Cowwarr. Interesting little town with a lot of the houses and business having cow sculptures in the yard or out the front. From Cowwarr it was on to Stratford via Maffra for a short stop. On then to Bairnsdale for morning tea and a bit of souvenir shopping before heading through Bruthen to Buchan for lunch.

We actually went to Buchan to do the tourist thing and visit the Buchan Caves. Good idea but we didn't execute it too well as lunch was a bit slow and we were supposed to be at the caves about 30 minutes before to buy tickets, not about 5 minutes before and making the rest of the tour group wait for us.

Great visit to the Royal Cave. While all caves of stalagmites and stalactites are similar, they all have different formations and stories. If you check the photos, you will get to see quite a lot of the formations from Buchan. From memory the guide said they were estimated to be between 8 - 18 million years old. They were discovered in 1911 and opened to tourists in 1913. One thing about this cave is there are no living things in the cave and the air is very fresh and clean All lighting is 12v LED to protect the cave environment. Temperature is a constant 17 degrees with humidity between 90 and 95%. It was a 45 minute tour with a lot to see.

After Buchan we headed over and down the mountain through some beautiful country to Orbost for afternoon tea. From there it was south along the Snowy River to Marlo and along the coast for a while until going north again to get on the Princes Hwy for a short run into Cann River and home for tonight.

Tomorrow, back to where we started in Yass and the end of the formal part of the ride.
