Superbikes 2016 Ride - Day 8

Tuesday, 1 March 2016

Up again early and on the road 30 minutes before sunrise at 6:55am. From Cootamundra we headed up through Young to Cowra for a quick fuel stop then on to Canowindra for breakfast. This is advertised as a historic town but I usually just travel through it on my way to a destination somewhere north or south. It actually appears to be quite a nice town if you get off the main road and have a look around. Stopped at a little cafe in the main street and had a beautiful breakfast, enough to keep us going for the rest of the day. Then it was on to Wellington then across to Gulgong then up the Castlereagh Hwy, a right and left onto the Black Stump Hwy to Coolah for our next fuel stop.

Between Wellington and Gulgong we passed a caravan and Clint made a comment about how how biker aware the driver was, ensuring plenty of room and waving us around. Turns out it was a mate of Clint's and a fellow bike rider. He gave Clint a call to confirm and we waited in Coolah for him to arrive just to say gidday. We were in no rush.

From Coolah, still too hot to be called Coolah, it was north through Gunnedah and Manilla to Warialda for the next fuel stop. 36 degrees during that leg, 774 klms so far but still plenty of daylight, 4:00pm but only 3:00pm Queensland time. One of the benefits of daylight saving if you want the afternoons to last forever. The weather was looking a bit threatening but we felt ok and were ready to run for home, only 500 or so klms to go.

Out of Warialda straight into a shower but was only 200 metres wide then it was north to Texas and north-east to Stanthorpe on wet roads with the weather looking more and more threatening. Pulled into the servo for the last fuel stop as the rain started. Fueled up and into wet gear as the temperature was hovering between 18 and 19 degrees, no time to be wet with 200 klms to go. Yeah right, 20 klms down the road, temperature up to 25 degrees and not a drop of rain in sight. Strip off the wets, hoping it stays dry the rest of the way.

Some more encounters with wet roads but the rain had passed before us. Terrific day's ride, great week of riding under the wheels, some very exciting racing, new friends and all in all a good time. Thanks for the invite Clint.

Pulled up at home at 8:30pm, 14 hours after leaving Cootamundra and around 1200 klms for the day. Total for the trip, 4161.2 klms by speedo.
