Up early and had a light breakfast to get us on our way. With time to spare based on my reading of the Public Transport App, we walked to the station expecting a few minutes wait for the next train. Barely on the platform and a train to the correct terminal arrives and away we go. I must have misunderstood the app information as we arrived at the airport about 20 mins earlier than expected. No problem, just a bit longer wait sitting on hard airport seats.
Our plane was late arriving for loading, some delay coming from maintenance apparently. Finally on board and moving but out of sequence meant we had a longer wait to get airborne. Any chance of making up time went out the window when we were out of sequence also on landing. Runway a long way from the terminal then a long slow taxi to the terminal meant we were still over 30 minutes late.
Into immigration and here we go, no. Non-EU passengers into a special section. Over 1/2 the passengers were non-EU but the EU section had 4 or 5 officers, non-EU had 3. Then a group split across the three and everyone in the group had problems getting through so there were a lot of disgruntled people standing around waiting. After waiting at least 30 minutes more flights had arrived and there were a couple of hundred passengers lined up. Finally a couple of extra officers arrive to process everyone and with the group's problems resolved, we were through and luggage in hand, headed for the hire car.
Now we had planned a reasonably tight but achievable afternoon of sightseeing, the loss of over an hour was pushing that. The car hire desk sent us outside where the bus would be waiting to take us to the pick-up point. No bus, another 20 minutes wait until he arrived. Finally we pick up the car, a well used Skoda Rapid, not quite the Ford Focus we ordered but a diesel,so that would make up for that. With a number of marks that were not listed on the sheets, that meant photos to be taken and delays getting a further inspection and getting extra marks listed on the sheet.
Finally mobile after getting the GPS, Spot and Camera set up we headed out into the Dublin traffic; and stopped, and started, and stopped. This went on for over an hour by which time we had covered about 12 kilometres. Great, planned program not looking good. Next thing, car gives out a warning that we've lost pressure in the right rear tyre; stopped, looked at it, figured it was a sensor issue and kept going until we found a tyre garage. Tyre checked, no problem, must be a failed sensor. Eventually out of the traffic and heading toward various points between Dublin and Kilkenny it was around 4:00pm with about 150 klms to go. By dropping a couple of the things we planned to see, we finally arrived at or lodging at 7:00 pm then headed downtown for dinner. By the time we were back, downloaded photos and booked accommodation for Saturday night, we were too tired for anything else and just fell into bed.
That's part of the reason why this update is late. By now were are learning that even small town seem to have traffic jams at any corner where there is a traffic light. Why, who knows? Things can only improve tomorrow.
